The Balloon Uncle

Angela, 6 years of age, lived with her father and mother. Everyday her parents went out for work. During the summer holidays, she stayed alone in the house. Her mother and father went to work and she had nothing to do. She read story books and in the afternoon she went out to play with other kids in the park outside the house. She came back to the house before her parents arrived.

One day she was playing in the park when she saw a man with balloons. All the kids rushed to that man and they each bought one. They were able to take money from their parents, but poor Angela couldn’t do that. She looked sadly at a big red balloon with white spots and wished she had money to buy it. The man noticed that she was the only child who didn’t buy a balloon from him.

He asked what the matter was. She said that her parents were at the office and she had no money but said that she liked the red balloon. The man said that he will not be able to come the next day as he would go somewhere else. The man went away. Angela was very sad. She came back to the house and was about to enter when she saw the red balloon in front of her house. There was a note attached, “With love, from the balloon uncle.”
