The art of puppetry is popular world wide. Puppetry acquires many forms but they all share the practice of animating inanimate performing objects. Throughout the world various forms and content of puppetry is developed by groundbreaking puppeteers such as Tony Sarg, Bill Baird, Joan Baixas, Philipe Genty, Peter Schumann, Jim Henson and Julie Taymor. The International Puppetry Association known as UNIMA, was founded in Prague in the 1920s. Sergey Vladimirovich Obraztsov was a Russian puppet master popularly known as the “father of modern puppetryâ€, established puppetry as an art form. Various forms of puppets are hand or glove puppets, shadow puppets, rod puppets and marionette or string puppets. Hand puppets are controlled by one hand that occupies the inside hollow portion of the puppet. A shadow puppet is a cut-out figure held between a source of light and a translucent screen. In rod puppetry, the puppets are constructed around a central rod secured to the head. And in the famous marionette or string puppetry, the puppet is suspended and controlled by the number of strings and sometimes a central rod attached to a control bar held from above by the puppeteer. The control bar can either be horizontal or a vertical one. Now kids can easily identify the kinds of puppetry.
