How to Save Your Children From Poisonous Plants
Is it safe to let children play in the garden when you don’t know whether the plants in the garden are safe? The answer is – yes! There is no need to keep children away from plants. The best way to help avoid a poisoning is through education and common sense.
Teach your toddler never to put leaves, stems, bark, seeds, nuts or berries from any plant into their mouths.
Never leave small children in a garden by themselves. Children are curious and if it smells nice, or looks good, they will try to eat it. Watching adults pick blackberries, strawberries and other edible fruits may encourage a child to pick and eat berries. But, plants can trick; one part may be edible while another part is poisonous. Teaching them not to eat wild berries is the best.
Most plants must be eaten to cause harm, while others only need to be touched like poison oak. Most toxic plants cause only minor symptoms, depending on the amount eaten. It is very rare for plants to cause life-threatening symptoms, but it can be a choking hazard for anyone.
Just because some berries are safe for birds and animals does not mean they are safe for people. Some plants that are not toxic to humans are harmful to animals, and some plants toxic to humans are safe for some animals. Pets need protection just like children.
It’s hard to know which plants are safe or unsafe. Bottom line is teach your child not to put any part of the plants in their mouth and don’t leave them in the garden alone. That could save you worries.
