Which is the largest living bird?
Ostrich is the largest living bird. It is 2 – 2.5 meters tall and weighs anywhere from 70 to 135 killograms. Ostrich can run at the speed of 40 mph. They have excellent eyesight, powerful legs and large external ear canals

Do fishes ever sleep?
Most fishes do not sleep, as they do not have eyelids. But they do rest when the light dims.They rest against rocks, bracing themselves with their fins. Many fishes rest during the day and are active during the night.

How did “hippopotamus” get its name?
The word “hippopotamus” means “river horse”. The animal got this name because it spends much of its time in the water and its wide nostrils and ears look like that of a horse.

What is the origin of the dog?
All living members of the dog family are descendants of a wolf-like creature called “Tomarctus”. This ancient canine, called “the father of the dogs”, roamed the forests about 15 million years ago.

Can snakes hear?
Snakes have no ears so they cannot hear air-borne sounds. But snakes can feel vibrations on the ground hence when someone approaches them they can make it out due to the vibrations of the feet on the ground.

Why do a cat’s eyes glow in the dark?
The cat’s eyes are adapted for seeing in the dark. During the day, the pupils contract, but at night they open wide letting in every bit of light possible. The back of the eyes is coated with polished silvery pigments called Eumelanin and Phaeomelanin, which reflects every bit of light that falls on the eye. That is why cat’s eyes glow in the dark.

How do parrots talk?
Parrots do not talk; they only imitate sounds that human beings make. They can’t express themselves and are definitely not sharing any thoughts, they ‘talk’ simply because they enjoy imitating sounds. Parrots do not learn human speech easily. The words must be repeated slowly and clearly, many times over. Once it learns a word or phrase, it probably never forgets.

Do all peacocks have feathers?
Only male peacock have feathers. The females don’t have these beautiful feathers. Peacocks display their feathers and dance to attract peahens.

Do hyenas really laugh?
There is a species of hyena, who are called laughing hyenas. But actually hyenas don’t laugh. When this creature is on the prowl or becomes excited, it makes a howling and chuckling noise that sounds like a laugh.
