Most water heaters at homes in US and UK today are gas based, but electric water heaters are used in other parts of the world. A water heater uses the simple ‘Heat Rise’ principle to separate hot water from the cold.

As cold water is let into a water heater, it remains at the tank bottom as it is denser than hot water. If hot water is used faster than the rate at which the heating elements can heat incoming cold water, and all of the hot water that the tank holds is consumed, you run out of hot water while showering. If this happens too often, it could either mean that the heating element in the water heater has burned out or your water heater is a little small for the house. Or it could also mean that you are taking awfully long baths.

Water heater safety tips at home:

• If steam or boiling water comes out of valve or the faucets, shut the heater off immediately.
• If you hear a weird or rumbling sound, the heater might be overheating, so turn it off.
• If temperature is a problem on a gas heater, check that the temperature control is on and is set correctly.
