Sailfish

The world is full of amazing creatures. Some are gigantic, some are so small that they are not visible to the naked eyes, some are poisonous and ferocious and some are innocent and harmless. Now, you must have heard about Sailfish. They are well known species of fish as they are much popular among the sport fisherman because of their speed. The sailfish is related to other “billed” fish, such as Marlin and Swordfish, which are all very fast. But the sailfish has them all beat by clocking in at speeds up to 68mph. they are found both in Atlantic and Pacific oceans with different scientific names. Pacific sailfish are called “Istiophorus albicans” and the Atlantic sailfish are known as “Istiophorus platypterus”. They are the same species with a slight difference in their length. The Pacific Ocean sailfish tend to grow significantly larger up to 10 feet. Sailfish prefer to live in warm waters approximately 79 degrees F. The diet of a sail fish consists of Flying fish and squid, preferring tunas, mackerels, jacks and other fish that swim near the ocean’s surface. Divers have reported seeing several sailfish work together to corral their prey, using their high fins to create a wall that keeps the smaller fish from escaping, a unique way of preying. The average length of a sailfish is 6 to 8 feet, but the world’s record holder caught in 1994 weighed 141 pounds and was over ten feet long.
