Adoption

Adopting a child could be one of the most rewarding experiences for parents and the child adopted. It could be the child’s best chance of a good life. There are different ways to adopt a child – social service agencies, step-adoptions, relative adoptions, etc. Relative adoptions are becoming more common. Couples may turn to adoptions due to various reasons such as infertility, compassion, or to avoid spread of genetic diseases.

Who can adopt? Usually, any adult who is considered medically fit can adopt, but somoe countries have special rules and requirements like age gap between the adopter and the child, must have been a resident in the country for a time period, etc. The person who is going to adopt is required to go through a series of medical tests to be deemed ‘fit’. You do not need to be in the same race, culture or religion as the child, although preferences exist for many.

The adoption process usually can take up to eight months to complete, but it varies depending on the location. The cost of adoption, again varies from place to place. In some countries, it is illegal to charge adoption, while in others adoption must be only on non-profit basis.

Some of the issues concerning adoption are children wanting to seek out their birth parents and preserving the family heritage
