Eating habits: breads

The most common of all problems amongst children is eating habits. Generally most of the children have eating problems. Either they don’t like eating much or they become very choosy but even then they like eating breads. But parents often find it difficult as to what kind or type of bread should be given to their children? There are several choices from white bread to wheat bread to honey wheat bread and more. Different kids have different taste buds and this will determine which type of bread they will opt for. It will also be necessary to see the nutritional values of the chosen bread. All kinds of breads generally have similar nutrients and proteins like calories which is about 40-70 per slice, total fat ranges from 0.5-1g, 90-130gm sodium and protein is 1.5-3g with about 4-8% iron.

The amount of cholesterol is nil or low in all types of bread. However, the quantity of fiber may vary in different breads. Amount of vitamin B6, E, magnesium, folic acid , zinc, copper and manganese is generally more in wheat breads and have also have high amount of fiber. Whole wheat bread or whole grain breads have more fiber, say about 100% compared to white breads or breads made of white flour. Fiber in a higher amount is good for children who have constipation. White breads, which have more calcium and are good for the children who do not prefer to have diary products. Read the nutritional label before buying bread and always go for the one, which is the healthiest for the child.
