The creativity of a child could be measured formally by tests or informally at home itself. Once a child is identified as being creative and the child seems to generate original ideas, it is the duty of parents to foster the talent. The following are a few tips for this:
• Give him time. Children need long periods of time to explore and work their best. Allow sufficient time for the child to come up with original ideas in whatever he does.
• Do not criticize unusual thoughts or ideas. Appreciate your child’s efforts and reinforce confidence in his abilities, whilst giving full freedom and responsibility to deal with the outcome of their thinking.
• Create a suitable atmosphere at home to play and to tolerate risks and mistakes.
• Provide sufficient exposure for your child to various people, thoughts, experiences and cultures. The more the child is exposed to the outside world, the more he learns, and more the chances that he thinks out of the box.
• Do not pressurize. In this instant noodles world, every parent wants the child to become popular and in a short time span, without proper assessment of the child’s interests and talents. It is wise to be patient with the child and allow him to do what he is best at.
• Do not set high expectations. As a subsequence of the previous point, a child is going to be more creative when he is not pushed, when he is not expecting rewards, and is not going to be subject to a long evaluation process to test his work.
• Make asking questions a practice for your child. Be patient with them and give them honest answers for every question they ask.
