Gifted Children

Children are considered ‘gifted’ , or ‘exceptionally able’ if they have certain characterisitics that is not typical of their age. Some of these are:

• Relentlessly asking questions
• Early maturity in walking and talking.
• Good creativity, imagination and vocabulary
• Self motivated and independent
• Quick grasp of ideas
• Signs of leadership
• High physical and mental energy, alertness and eagerness to learn

Most of the times, parents are the first to recognize a child’s special abilities. These children are generally a delight to raise, perform exceptionally well at school, and their emotionally maturity comes quicker than normal children. Other subtle indicators include a child gravitating towards older children, with whom their intellectual maturity could match with, and intense concentration in their area of interest (sometimes for extended periods). More often than not, a child tends to show keen interest in a specific area. For example, a mathematically gifted child could show an early interest in recognizing numbers, counting and spatial awareness.

Gifted children also tend to develop social problems, frustration due to the intellectual needs not being fulfilled, peer rejection, and impatience.

It is worth remembering that however good the talent a child possesses, and your wish to nurture it, early childhood should primarily be a time to play and explore. It is best to let the child take the lead and take time and pleasure in doing what they excel at.
