Handling Adolescence

Adolescence is perhaps the most important period of life in terms of growth and change. An awful lot of doubts spring up in the adolescent mind. In this period of life, the teenager craves to exercise his likings to network socially, need privacy, want to be able to establish a certain identity for himself, and choose his subject of interest and career. As a result, this period might be accompanied by signs of rebellious attitudes, aggression and fluctuations in mood.

Parents should understand the process of adolescence so as to make the phase smooth for their growing children.

During adolescence, children undergo changes both physically and behaviorally, which is a natural cause of concern for the parents. There are various factors which are involved such as hormonal changes in the body, exposure to media and its vagaries, and the attitude of parents themselves. Adolescent children find it especially difficult to adjust to the sexual changes they go through.

During this time, it is the attitude and support of parents that would be beneficial to the child’s growth. A reserved and stubborn attitude would only make things worse. It is best for parents to be patient, keep an open mind and be understanding with their children during this turbulent phase. It is not the child who needs to be understanding, since the changes are more of a biological nature, it must be the parents who should understand the child and help him make a positive, successful transition to an adult.
