Teaching children about medicines are a part of teaching them good health practices. Children usually want to know certain questions about medicines like what they taste like, how long they have to take it, will it be tablets or syrups, why they have to take it, etc.
The most common complaints in children are due to viral and bacterial infections. Commonly used tablets like Paracetamols are proven effective treatments for relief from pain and fever. Medicines are found in different varieties such as tablets, liquids, drops, syrups, capsules, and granules. If a child is taking medicine for the first time, it is best to consult a doctor to decide the most appropriate type of medicine. Usually, though, small children prefer liquids with added flavored additives. It is quite allright to mix medicines with fruit juice, as long as the prescribed medicine is given in the right amount.
As parents, you need to their questions patiently and responsibly.
• Always encourage consumption of only prescribed medicines.
• Read the directions for consuming medicines with your child.
• Continue the prescribed medicines even if your childs is recovering.
• Ask your child for any side effects experienced during the course of medicines.
Remember, the more children know about medicines, the more they become prepared for independent and responsible use as they grow up.
