Parent-Teacher relationship

Considering that a child spends his/her peak learning times at school, it is important to maintain a healthy and cordial relationship with the teacher and other authorities.A parent teacher conference is a good medium to know about the development of your child’s ability and behaviour. The following will help parents keep their relations with school healthy.

• Ask about your child’s behavior and performance at school. Say a few things about your child’s positive qualities and interests, but don’t delve too much into negative qualities.

• Keep an open mind to the teacher’s suggestions.Teachers observe the trends of your child’s behavior over a period of time in classrooms, and would naturally have important points to convey.

• Let the teacher know about certain important events that may have happened in the family. For example, death in the family, divorce, new baby born, etc. This will help the teacher assess your child’s performance considering background information that could potentially impact the child. You don’t need to get into really personal stuff, though.

• Assure them that you can be counted upon.Let the teacher know when you are generally available, and show interest perhaps by volunteering to arrange a trip for the kids, or reading out to them. But don’t promise them something beyond your time or abilities.

• Talk to your child about his performance at school, praise him for good work, and also talk about work habits and his areas of improvement.

• Keep the contact numbers of the school, and give them yours too, to convey that you are available.

Remember that more the support you give for teachers, the more you are helping your child.
