Young Children Also Suffer from Depression

depressed child Surprising, isn’t it!

But it is true.

Children do often feel sad and depressed, but if these symptoms persist for a length of time, and when they further degenerate into irritability, withdrawal from social activity, and increased or decreased appetite, persistent fatigue, lack of focus, then it is time to take stock and look for professional help.

The causes for childhood depression are manifold. They could range for emotional disturbances, to the loss of a family member, or even genetic reasons, but it is important to realise that if it is a case of clinical depression, then it cannot just go away.

The first step should always be to seek proper treatment. The treatment initially will consist of counselling and in some cases antidepressants may be prescribed.

The role of a parent assumes tremendous importance with regard to a child suffering from depression. You are the main counsellor and his/her support systems. Not only do you have to have immense patience when dealing with this particular child, you also have to ensure that your son or daughter gets all the encouragement they need.

It is not easy for a child who is suffering from depression and is unable to understand why he behaves the way he does. It is your responsibility to make him understand that this is an illness and with professional help it will go away soon.

Take extra care of this child of yours, so that he can lead a happy life, even when he is an adult, without any recurrence of the depression symptoms.
